Food Distribution

On the first day of the lockdown, the first food distribution by the government was made. Daikon, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, gourd, tomato, green pepper, and such were given. As I was not expecting to receive much, it caught me as a surprise to be honest. With the amount of food I bought, I had enough food for a person at least for 5 days at this point. Delivery service was also available at first, so I had no concerns... but I was proven to be wrong.

I was happy to receive a lot of food. Since the vegetables are fast to perish, I immediately made some stew and pickled the cucumbers. Stew was put into the freezer.

First lunch after the start of the lockdown. I had a lot of variety as I had at this time some canned pacific saury I bought from Japan and instant miso soup as well.

After eating up all the stew, I ate the frozen pasta and mixed rice I made before the lockdown. I also made some extra pasta while I still had some fresh vegetables.

It was finally April 4th, the day before the end of the lockdown. But I never got any announcements regarding any release. The delivery service had stopped by now as a disease prevention measure. I started seeing a lot of frustrations by the residents of my apartment in WeChat conversations.
As there were not much I could do, the most concern I had was about the food. When a week has passed from the start of the lockdown, the homemade frozen pasta and mixed rice were almost all gone.
But then, the government started on the food distribution again. On April 9th, I received long shelf-life milk, vegetable biscuits, 2 apples, 3 oranges, canned food, and rice seasonings. Rice on April 12th, mixed vegetables on April 17th, eggs and dried noodles on April 18th. I naturally raised my arm in joy when some vegetables were included.

Although the amount of food I received in mid-April was quite good, the remaining amount of food especially the vegetables started to get low. I made it through the lockdown just barely because I had some time to prepare before the lockdown start. I cannot imagine how awful it would have been if the lockdown had started at the same time as its announcement.

As some of you might have seen it on the news in Japan, Jing-an district which I lived in had a gap in the amount of food distributed. There were some areas which had a lot of distributions, while other areas had very little or even none. People were not satisfied as the distribution did not seem enough. Black market started selling the distributed food for a cost which was several times more than the usual. Because of this, I had to sign for receiving any distribution.

The government then started realizing how people were making complaints, so they allowed food shopping on the Internet from mid-April as long as we ordered as a group. Procurement of the food became drastically easy & I was able to get what I wanted. Starting towards the end of April, food delivery was also permitted. As I was living alone, this really was good news.

Antigen Test & PCR Test

It doesn't matter if it's a weekday or weekend, the door on my apartment house gets loudly knocked around 9:30AM. This means it's time for an antigen test. I have to do the test myself, but thanks to China being the world's leading IT country, there was a dedicated application explaining the steps in detail with a video clip. But it did take me a while to get used to sticking a cotton swab up my nose to take the specimen.

So, let's give it a try...

After 15 minutes, I register the result to the specified application.

PCR tests are also made to all of the apartment residents in the afternoon every several days. By the loud knocks on the same floor, you know right away it is time for a PCR test. I would put on a surgical mask and get on the elevator which is packed. There is no physical distance among us. The lobby on the 1st floor is also packed with people. As many are asymptomatic, I have no idea who may be infected. I ponder to myself it's no wonder the new infections are increasing in number. As a fact, until mid-April, the number of newly infected people and death were increasing. I heard that they will forcefully take you to a quarantine facility if you test positive, so I was trembling with fear until I saw the negative test result. You may have heard about the poor condition of the quarantine facility which has rain leaks and no dividers between the beds.

PCR Test Area

Good and bad, China is known for repeating trial and error. They eventually decided to do the testing outside the apartment on the premise since the indoor testing got too packed with people. When there is no testing, the residents of the apartment gathered around this outdoor area to sunbathe, exercise, and play Chinese or Western chess. Since I was starting to put on weight after a month of not going out, I used a jumping rope in the basement parking lot in the evening on the weekdays & played mini-soccer in the courtyard on the weekends. But I still had a lot of time to kill on the weekends when I was not working. In a situation like this, I went out to the courtyard and grumbled over everything with other residents (mostly the foreigners).

This is the end of this article. In the next article, I would like to write about how we should get ready for a lockdown - things I wish I had better prepared & things I was happy that I prepared.
